Christmas Brews

Hey, Hoppyrescuers!

I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas filled with joy, laughter, and, of course, great beer. I went shopping at Citymarket Pirkkala, and while there was so much to choose from, I picked up a few special goodies. I explored some festive brews that truly captured the spirit of the season. I spent Christmas with my parents in my hometown, and this year, the holiday was incredibly rainy and slippery. Every year, I take a walk down the cottage road on Christmas Eve, but since it was so slippery this time, I brought along a kick sled. It was really convenient when I wanted to take a break and enjoy a beer. Let me share three beers that made my Christmas even more special.

Nailo Brewing - FIKA Cinnamon Bun Coffee Porter 6.2%

The FIKA Cinnamon Bun Coffee Porter a spiced coffee porter that’s both comforting and delicious. It’s like having a fresh-baked korvapuusti (cinnamon bun), but in a drinkable version. This brew was created to commemorate Oulun Olutseura’s (beer society) 35th anniversary and is infused with cold-brewed Colombian coffee, cinnamon sticks, and cardamom pods to bring out that korvapuusti flavor. The rich coffee notes are complemented by a surprisingly light body. Every sip felt like a holiday indulgence, and it was the perfect pairing with Christmas sweets. Nailo Brewing, based in Oulu, Finland, is known for its innovative and high-quality beers, blending traditional brewing techniques with bold, modern twists.

CoolHead Brew - Glögi Sour 8%

Glögi is a beloved Finnish holiday drink that captures the essence of winter. A warm, spiced beverage similar to mulled wine, glögi is traditionally made with fruit juices and infused with aromatic spices like cinnamon, cloves, and cardamom. CoolHead Brew creates an annual glögi beer, and this year they’ve upped the ABV to 8% from the previous 5%. The Glögi Sour is remarkably close to the real thing, with smooth spices and a crisp sour body typical of sour beers. This festive brew truly felt like Christmas in a glass, and I paired it with white chocolate and lingonberry panna cotta. It’s a great way to enjoy that cozy mulled wine feeling, but with a refreshing twist. CoolHead Brew, based in Espoo, Finland, is known for its bold flavors and creative approach to brewing.

Maku Brewing - Joulupusero Red IPA 5%

The Joulupusero (Christmas Sweater) Red IPA from Maku Brewing had a rich amber-red color with a delightful balance of sweetness, roasted malt, and fresh American hops. You could taste caramel tones and dark fruitiness, making it a great choice for Christmas. I paired it with smoked salmon and cottage cheese with cranberry jam. Maku Brewing, based in Tuusula, Finland, is all about creating unique, well-balanced brews that push the boundaries of traditional Finnish brewing.
